Kettle Foods, a UK company, purchased Metcalf’s
skinny popcorn last year. Recently, Kettle Foods has purchased Cornpoppers.
Cornpoppers was a family business founded in
1979. It produced branded and private-label popcorn products that were sold in
the West Midlands in the UK.
Why is Kettle Foods buying these popcorn
companies? The UK popcorn market is one of the fastest-growing markets in the
UK. The popcorn market grew by 10% during the last year. UK citizens are
developing a taste for popcorn because it is a lighter, healthier snack.
One goal of Kettle Foods is to make the
company a dynamic snack food business in Europe.
Popcorn is gaining in popularity
internationally.

Movies can bomb at the box office (and they
do!). But there is one aspect of movie going that remains constant—popcorn. The
snack is still the most popular food item for moviegoers.
Ready-to-eat popcorn and caramel popcorn are
two favorites. Their consumption rose 16.9% between February 2016 and February
2017. A result has been spin-off s such as popcorn chips and cakes.
That 16.9% increase translates to 160 million
pounds of popcorn sold. The revenue from that increase equals $1.05 billion. Most
of the snack—about ¾--is eaten at home. Other places where popcorn is popular
is in theaters, stadiums, and schools.
Popcorn remains affordable—part of the reason
it is so popular.

Pregnant and craving something but want to be
a good mother to your unborn child?
Well about some popcorn? Pop it in an
air-popper and popcorn is not only good, but good for you and your child. Watch
the salt and butter, though.
